SOL Details from VDOE

We are reaching out to provide information about Virginia's state assessment program, which includes the Standards of Learning Tests (SOL) for students in grades 3 through 8, and specific high school credit courses. These assessments, aligned with the Virginia Standards of Learning, will be given to students from April 29th through May 12th. All SOL tests will be taken in-person at school with trained test examiners.

Prior to testing:

  • Students are encouraged to practice using the SOL Practice Items at https://va8.testnav.com/client/index.html to become familiar with the test items and tools they'll see on their SOL tests.

  • On testing days, students should bring their fully charged laptop and charger to school.

  • Students should not have access to a personal electronic device, such as a smartwatch or cell phone, during SOL testing. If a student is found to be in possession of any of these devices during testing, disciplinary consequences may be given and the student will not be allowed to retake the test. Please remind your child to leave these devices at home or follow the examiner’s storage directions. The full testing and electronics policy is here: https://tinyurl.com/HCPSElectronicsPolicy

More information about Standards of Learning tests is available at https://www.doe.virginia.gov/parents-students/parent-resources/assessment

If you have questions about the federal, state or division assessment policies, please contact Angela Bell at ambell@henrico.k12.va.us or Kelli Brown at kcbrown@henrico.k12.va.us. If you have questions related to your school’s testing processes and options, please contact your school’s principal or school test coordinator at 804-364-0830.

Keeping Toys at Home, Please

We have noticed an increase of students bringing toys from home and playing with them throughout the school day. To avoid distractions and classroom intruptions, unauthorized toys (such as stuffed animals, yo-yos, action figures, tennis balls, board games, and athletic equipment (unless needed for a Pocahontas sport)) should remain at home!

If objects are brought to school and cause a disruption, the teacher may ask for the object to be given to them for the duration of the class period and/or day.

Thank you for speaking with your student

    Message from our PTA President

    Hi Hawk Families!

How are we in the last quarter of the school year already? This year has zipped by for our family!

Our PTA hopes that you and your families are doing well and enjoying the Virginia Spring flowers, birds, and taking some time to go outside in the fresh, pollinated air. We have a few more things coming up for the end of the year and hopefully we can take a few things off your list of things to do!

Spirit Night: Thursday, April 16th at Deep Run Roadhouse! We are hosting a Spirit Day at Deep Run and 30% of all sales for the day go toward offsetting the cost of our BBQ lunch we host for our teachers during Teacher Appreciation Week! This is a popular lunch event for our teachers so take a night off of cooking and go to Deep Run Roadhouse! When you are finished picking up your order or eating, place your receipt in the Pocahontas box at the counter so our PTA will get credit for your purchase!

SOL Testing is coming up on Wednesday April 29th, May 6th, and May 12th! Our Hospitality Team is treating our Teachers to Snacks on testing days so they can take a quick break and refuel! Please SIGN UP HERE to donate snacks! Drop off all snacks by Monday the 27th! Our Hospitality Team is also providing fresh fruit on each day of the testing, thank you for helping us Spoil our Teachers!

This year's Teacher Appreciation week is May 4th-8th and we have some fun things planned for our teachers and we want to help you get your to-do list to-done! In addition to the barbeque lunch, we are also hosting a coffee breakfast for our teachers so they can be energized and caffeinated to greet the day, and our students! We are also offering our GIFT CARD DRIVE for our teachers, this year with a little bonus! There is an option to enter a gift message and we will hand write your messages! Write a message for the whole staff or one for an individual teacher that has made an impact on your student, help us cover the mailroom walls with words of affirmation for our teachers! Choose an amount, write a message, and the PTA will take care of the rest! The Gift Card and Message Drive runs through Midnight, May 3rd!

Our next PTA meeting is Tuesday, April 14th at 6pm in the Pocahontas Library. This is a change due to the voting day on April 21st We would love to have your thoughts and input so please join us or send an email that I can share with the group!  Interested in becoming a board member?  You can join us at any of our meetings or send me an email, we encourage all Hawk Family Voices! How can the PTA make your student's middle school adventure amazing?
